Daily Prompt: The Road Less Traveled

Pinpoint a moment in your past where you had to make a big decision. Write about that other alternate life that could have unfolded.

The N levels were over and school kids were relieved. Everyone has managed to get their results, after the break. I received mine as well, carefully opening the sealed envelope and i  saw the number ‘9’ on the paper. That moment, i wanted to shout and say ‘Yes!’ , overjoyed like the as if i won the ‘grammies’ kind of person because at last i passed.

Wasn’t expecting too much on better results, because I found the results i achieved was already good enough. Studies wasn’t really my main forte, so upon hearing my principal’s talk on a new scheme program that allows students to skip their O levels next year, and choose to go to ITE Higher Nitec, I’ve made that very decision, and that change my whole life, learning more valuable things and things I had more interested in.

I guess if I had stayed at continue my O level’s like how the others did, I could have just graduated with probably averagely pass, get lower marks, or won’t be knowing what to do after.I could have passed and get into polytechnic studies earlier, but it would have been a different course. I would have graduated with all my other classmates who stayed through, and went NS earlier on.

I wouldn’t have had more ex’s in secondary school than i have during the ITE days. 😀 , I might be still slacking with the secondary school boys, and talk about how great secondary school has been, because I wouldn’t have experience what its like to be in ITE, (schooling in ITE, was still the best thing that happened to me)

I would have been chilling with the boys I know in my secondary school most of the time, because they’re the only friends I had that time.

Alternate life that was less travelled, could have been.

Daily Prompt: Shape Up or Ship Out

Write a letter to the personality trait you like least, convincing it to shape up or ship out. Be as threatening, theatrical, or thoroughly charming as is necessary to get the job done.

Inspired by the Daily Prompts.

Dear Choosy,

I am so concerned for you. How have you been coming along ? I remembered having to deal with you recently on what to do on Sunday night.

I kinda wish that you would just let me decide, and not come back and interfere me every time I’ve made my decision, and come up with 36743532678 more plans.

Some days, I miss you. I can still recall having to choose over so many pants and shirts over at Uniqlo, the walk to Bugis Street, and having to want to buy all the things in the store, yet you stop me. You saved me from the wicked offer sales that’s bound to test the humanity of mankind, and for that I can’t thank you enough.

I do however want to emphasise on a point. I wish you would shape up and not to be choosy when it comes to finding a partner. It has blown the juice out of me, having to go out on a nice date, then having you put my ‘flaws’ scanner into play.  At least if you can’t be a little less choosy, then don’t come at all.

I have adapted to your kind survival kit reflexes, when it comes to money-making, but relationships is not one of them. Let me sink in deep for a little, without having to think of how she’s not so magical, or one that I’ll get problems with.

I sometimes despise your connection with Mr Perfect and Mr Bored, having them to make me feel bad during certain days, thinking that you’re all part of a mafia ready to conquer every time I’m awake.

I hope not, because then I’ll have to ship you out, and that feeling is not worth it cause you’re still a friend I want to have during rainy days.

Daily Prompt: Dulled

Daily Prompt suggested,

You encounter a mysterious man offering you a magic potion that, once sipped, will make one of your senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch) super sharp — but dull the others. Will you sip it, and if so, what sense do you choose?

Linking it back to the previous prompt that i had about having a sense of hearing, that I’ve talked about the other day, upon hearing the news of a mysterious man offering me a magic potion, i had developed the supernatural ability to have a super-human ability to listen at great expectations.

Upon finishing up the magic potion , i had thought that my brain was almost going to explode. There was a sharp call, crying of loud noise, somehow just squeezing right into my eardrum, almost impairing my hearing senses, i didn’t hear anything else, but the loud screech that blasted my brain, much like what you feel after someone gives you a tight slap in the face. I fell down on my knee, hugging myself in hope of trying to contain that unbearable pain but up to no avail, cursing at the mysterious man, who’s putting me at the  position im experiencing.

My eyes started hinder and it was blurry , A wave right down my spine, spreads throughout my entire body leaving me with a feeling of numbness, unable to hold to empty glass of magic potion i drank earlier, it dropped to the floor, and cracked.

Then, there was complete silence. I looked up to the night sky in hope for some clearer view, but all i see is the dark smudging the night lights. The mysterious man was gone.

I heard a voice, it’s getting even louder, but i don’t see anyone near. It sound like it came from the front, but i don’t see anyone. The conversation was loud, so i turned around, just in case my mind was playing with me. I walked in front hoping to find something, and that’s when i notice a park.

Right after, a moment, right at the far end of the bushes parallel to a tiled walkway , a group of guys, appearing suddenly from the shadows of darkness in sight were walking, happily laughing. Voices sounded familiar, much like the one I’ve been hearing, but these very people were not just far away but out of sight. How can they be heard so far?

Curious event, maybe it could have been another group.

A noise came from the back, a light was flickering away, but it couldn’t have been possible because the light i saw was at least about a few meters out in the open field. The sound was almost microscopic , that even the smallest of sound was an agent to my hearing stimuli.

Looking at the nearest estate building apartment nearby, i hear a baby crying, a man arguing with a woman, “you have to stop this habit, your gambling problem is an addiction that’s harming not only us, but our baby”.

A dog was barking, a cat, screaming out of shock, and replies of banters and hissings. I was astounded, and as i gave focus on what i was able to hear, i also heard to clangs and clatters of a nearby coffeeshop, someone stirring a metal glass, a gut feeling telling me that’s someone just ordered a cup of coffee with carnation milk.

The flutter of a group of bats, flapping from tree to tree right above me, the sound of the water rushing in to the drain, below me, and a car that braked too late at the end of a traffic light causing a screech of rubber against gravel and dirt.

Everything was in comparison. The superhuman ability was real, and it has allowed me to eavesdrop things that was away, and things that were too soft to be heard by the ‘normal’ ear. Things that couldn’t have been seen, things that are most likely happening in the distances ahead.

I know it doesn’t end here. I’m not so sure what are the side effects, but i know its getting stronger, after each passing day. I might be able to hear, the sound of a television coming from a neighbour’s house, the communication among a few dozens a few kilometers by few weeks after, and i might then be able to hear the sounds of the vast ocean in my own house, in a month.

Daily Prompt: Feed Your Senses

The daily prompt suggested the daily post bloggers to,

Write down the first sight, sound, smell, and sensation I’ve experienced on waking up today. Pick the one I’ m most drawn to, and write. (For a bigger challenge, pick the one I’m least drawn to.)

Window from my room

Window from my room

Waking up was a usual routine, though today I heard of a different tone. I hear the sound of the door, making that wide squeaky sound, I hear mumblings just outside the room, I knew it was grandma. Her voice always seem too familiar. She has a deep husky voice, but not one’s that deeper than mine, her lazy voice when she talks to me on the phone.

I tried to remember, i tried to trace, i tried to grasp a hold of knowing that I’m always hearing the standard alarm buzzing through my ears, the birds chirping during the early sunrise, followed by a constant sound of a big machine running across the MRT train tracks, but i didn’t, not today.

What was the time now? , I woke up late and its already 8. I heard a faint voice talking to someone else, somewhere in the background. It sounds like its coming from the living room.

“Nasri, gone to work already?” Something was wrong. Grandma would know if I’m in. She would have heard the sound of my alarm ringing and come again to remind me every 10 mins to wake up, i didn’t hear to that either.

Soft mattresses slide, the bed joined creaked, i can also hear the dragging of my feet against the floor as i walked to the bathroom, passing by the noisy dryer, my grandma, always choose to operate in the morning. The sound of water splashing against my skin brings comfort, and a tinge of freshness, a wake up call to start a new day.

I still hear a conversation between two person in the living room. Looking out without my specs on after the bath, I can’t see a thing, but only to rely on the only thing that I am good with at that moment,

“Its your aunt. ” , my ear received.

Daily Prompt: Hi, Mom!

Daily Prompt and Journal.

Hi Mom!

Mother’s day was awesome. The times we spent together. I could have remembered all the rest of celebrating Mothers Day, but this year was special because we had quite a deep talk with each other. We had a talk about what was the thing you feel you had changed from last time until now, and though it was a little awkward at first(because honestly we’ve never really shared and talk about this kind of thing), it felt good at the end.

I remembered how I told you, that you had sacrifice a lot of yourself for me throughout this years.

Mum, I remember when you always told me that the doc’ said I was to be sent to special school because I had some problem, but you refused to give up and send me there. Instead you showered me with your undivided attention, and younger sis had to also learn to give in to me and learn to be more independent. You self-taught me, to pick up and learn things, and I don’t know how you have managed to do that.

I remember the mistakes and scoldings, but you know when to grab me and catch me back into your arms when i needed comfort and forgiveness. (Yes, i still somehow do need that)

I remember when we came back from Australia after a problem, and as much as you were trying to struggle to keep the family going, and trying to find a job, you didn’t give up on my education. You took my hand and we walked down each and every school that rejected my entry, and never quit until you managed to find me a school. You went all the way to the Ministry to get me studying back again.

You understood my teen years growing up, you gave and take, all those wild years i had before me. You took note of me smoking, having peircings, drinking, but you always advice me whenever you can.  I was drunk once, and you carried me from the neighbourhood, all the way to my bed.

I understand it wasn’t in your nature, from a strict parent, to change to a parent that is more understanding, but you did it anyway. Your sacrifice is way beyond, and that’s the strength I hope to have as well when i grow up. I’d never had to lie to you no matter how bad it is, and that was also because you taught me really well. You taught me how to handle things, at the same time, you allowed me to discover my own mistakes. You showed the right and wrong, at the same time, you allowed me to choose my path in life.

Thank you Mum.

This year, my sis and I had planned up a surprise for Mum, it was something that she had always wanted. We went out to celebrate with Sis and Grandma,

Mum loved Korean shows, and this and that, so this time round and we had BBQ Chicken for dinner that has Korean BBQ Cuisine kind of food.

Grandma’s shy, Sorry!

At the end of the day, Mum came home to a surprise. We walked around shopping centres and she always talk about this Nescafe Dolce Gusto, and every time she said she wanted it, we never really had it because it wasn’t really a need, but after a month of planning, sis, her boyfriend and I decided to buy the Automatic model for her.

I wasn’t there when she opened the present ’cause we don’t stay together, but sis did told me that she was jumping for joy and it was for so long that she’s seen her so happy in her life. Im still glad and happy for her.

Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers !

Daily Prompt: Landscape

In today’s daily prompt, the question asks,

When you gaze out your window — real or figurative — do you see the forest first, or the trees?

When i gaze outside my window, all I can see are forests. Forests that goes endless for days. I’m a fox, reeled into the depths of the realm that goes beyond every step further deeper into the unknown. As i stroll down the uncharted forest, curiosity makes me want to go travel even more. I passed by a tree, charmed by its existence.

Just as i was about to stop to enjoy its magnificence, i saw another tree beside, this tree, is different, but in didn’t end there, the next tree, its sleek figure. The next tree sways gently with the slow calm wind. Another tree rattles its leaves upon my arrival, kindly acknowledging my appearance, seeking attention.

The calling won’t end. I couldn’t stop like I’ve wished, to enjoy its beauty because every step i take hoped that i would find the perfect tree.

All i see is the big forest, too fast to stop for any tree, but maybe, just maybe, once the time is done, and the  I would then stop for a tree.

Daily Prompt: 180 Degrees

I’ve not posted daily prompts for awhile, but I missed posting daily prompts, because it has really gets the creativity juice going and brain thinking.

Tell us about a time you did a 180 — changed your views on something, reversed a decision, or acted in a way you ordinarily don’t.

Recalling the days back, I’ve done so much 180’s, i think there’s too much to say, so I guess I’m going to tell the one of the 180’s that really changed my life and how I think.

Back in the primary school days (not another old story again :D, haha okay bare with me), getting bullied was an normal routine. I was the school nerd, a weird kid really, yes you name it. Crying was routine too. Complains were usual, being the person that i was, i just had to complain to teachers, which eventually escalated up to DM’s and principal, and till my mum came school, but i guess it didn’t help much, because complaining only leads to more bullying.

The 180.
I don’t know why i was treated in such ways, i guess i was slow in understanding, but after awhile i ‘realized’ that maybe I was the problem. I guess instead of complaining, i had to deal with myself. Not to say that i had to fit in, but I guess the way i see it is, if I had wanted to change the way people think of me, I had to change myself. So no more long socks up way up high, better hairstyle, better ‘cool’ shoes ( oh yes how judgmental those days were where they see Kappa shoes), I don’t know, the way i communicate perhaps. Laugh it off to those mean jokes, then eventually things slowly went fine. Lesser bullying, lesser cries, more appreciation.

Coming to think of it, it’s always how we perceive things, you know. Changing one self is easier than trying to change someone’s else and I don’t agree with bullying, i think it’s really not so much of a good memory to remember by.

It does however change the way i think, see and feel, and I did have to go through it understanding the hard way. The future children does not have to go through the process, which is why i think that this 180 is the decision i had made.
Start doing something about it, understand yourself better.
